Overview

Drill home electricity facts by playing a fun “by the numbers” matching game and learn important energy terms with a DIY crossword puzzle activity. Afterwards, test your classroom's knowledge with an "electricity 101" quiz.

What you'll need

  • “Get power smart” slideshow
  • Slinky
  • “Electricity by the numbers” worksheet, printed and cut up (one set per student group)
  • Online crossword puzzle generator
  • “Crossword clues” template

Get power smart

  1. Pull up the “Get power smart” slideshow to explore how electricity is generated in B.C.
  2. Pause at slide 7 to demonstrate potential and kinetic energy by holding a slinky at the edge of a desk (potential energy) and releasing it over the edge (kinetic energy).
  3. Continue the slideshow, explaining how potential and kinetic energy relate to electricity here in B.C.

Electricity by the numbers match game

  1. Divide the class into small groups, giving each group one set of the trivia questions and numbered answers.
  2. Each group takes a few minutes to match up the questions and answers. Go over the correct answers together as a class and see how they did. Were there any surprises? Explore any terms or answers that were new or unclear.

Custom crossword

  1. Use an online crossword puzzle generator to make a crossword or have students create their own crossword puzzles using questions from the “Crossword clues” template.
