In the summer, most teachers take a much-deserved break from lesson-planning. And while Power Smart for Schools activities are designed with classrooms in mind, there are plenty of home-friendly activities which parents and guardians can use to inspire fun and learning all summer.
We’re excited for the opportunity to engage with parents, summer camps, and daycares in the summer. On top of increasing opportunities to share lessons on energy, sustainability, and more, using our home-friendly activities in the summer is a unique learning opportunity for these reasons:
- Learning should be fun and continuous. We want to inspire curiosity and discovery throughout the year, not only in classrooms.
- The summer presents opportunity for place-based learning. Whether students are on an EV road trip, visiting rivers and lakes, passing BC Hydro dams, or spending time outdoors, there are many opportunities to incorporate our home-friendly activities into summer fun.
- Reinforcing safety. Kids may come across electrical hazards in the summer, so parents and guardian may use our resources to help guide safety at home, outdoors, and while visiting our recreation sites.
The Summer Break takeover
For the next two months, our homepage has been transformed into the Summer Break hub. This page introduces our resources to a wide audience, including parents and others who may not have used our site before. We’ll be highlighting home-friendly activities which can be used in many settings outside of the classroom, and we are making these available to anyone without an account—although all are still welcome to make a free Power Smart for Schools account.
We're looking forward to engaging with anyone who is leading young learners and looking for fun things to do all summer.
Help us spread the word
We’ve prepared a one-page letter to introduce parents and other guardians to our summer activity content. We ask you to please share this digitally or in print with anyone who may benefit from adopting our resources to support fun and learning for K-12 students throughout the summer.
We’re also featuring the Activity passport for learners to share some of their activity highlights with us to receive a fun summer swag pack.
Thank you for your participating and support in Power Smart for Schools this past school year. We look forward to bringing you more great resources in the coming year. Please reach out to us if you have any questions or feedback for us.
