Instructions

What you'll need

  • TV or projector and computer
  • “Snow friend” handout, 1 per student
  • Colour pencils or crayons

  1. Start by asking students what they love about winter like keeping cozy indoors, playing in the snow, hot drinks, holiday celebrations, and lights.
  2. Share that in winter we use more electricity for things like powering lights, heating homes, and making hot chocolate. Ask students if they know how electricity is made in B.C. We use water to make electricity. Since every living thing needs water to survive, we need to do our part in saving electricity and water.
  3. Provide each student with a copy of the “Snow friend” handout and colouring pencils or crayons.

Quiz game

  1. With their handout in front of them, tell students they will be playing a quiz game to learn about the dos and don’ts of saving electricity and water. You can have students call out “Do” or “Don’t” to answer each quiz question.
  2. Explain that on some of the photos have hidden letters, so they should watch closely to find them to fill-in their snow friend.
  3. Launch the quiz. Read each of the statement out loud for students to respond “do” or “don’t”.
  4. After completing the quiz, read the riddle from the handout:
    • What am I? I fall from the sky, far more beautiful than rain. There are no two pieces that ever look the same.
    • English answer: SNOW
    • French answer: NEIGE
  5. Invite students to decorate and colour their “Snow friend” handout.
  6. Finish the activity by having students share any energy or water saving ideas during the chilly winter months.

Modify or extend this activity

Ask students to make a pledge to conserve energy during the winter break. Each student could commit to three energy or water saving ideas, write or draw them and take them home to place somewhere visible to remind them.

Teaching Notes

During the colder months, energy use generally increases as people heat their homes, use outdoor holiday lights, and use more hot water. This can lead to higher energy bills, along with the environmental impacts of using more energy. Students can help to conserve energy in their homes with different energy saving tips and encourage their household members to participate as well.

For holiday lights, energy-efficient LED bulbs use up to 90% less energy than incandescent lights and can last up to 10 times longer.

Assessment

  • Assess students’ understanding of ways to save electricity and water.
  • Assess students’ cooperation during the game.
