This generation of students has a lot on their shoulders including climate, sustainability, job security, equity, and more. It's one thing to give guidance to those who have a dream job or workplace in mind, but many of them don't know where to begin imagining a career let alone one that's fulfilling and connects with other things they value in life.
With that in mind, we have developed dynamic resources for students to explore what's out there and feel inspired that they can find something that they love to do and that makes a difference—even if they don't know exactly what that is yet! In this post we've summarized our latest Careers page, unit of activities, and interview article.
Check out our new resources to help spark students' imaginations about a career in BC Hydro and beyond.
A new hub for exploring BC Hydro careers
This year we launched our Career Connections page, which aims to inspire youth to imagine fulfilling careers for themselves at BC Hydro and beyond. It's an interactive scrolling page which is easy to explore on any device and features lots of engaging content:
- BC Hydro employee profiles, including insight into their career paths
- Video interviews with BC Hydro trainees and senior employees
- Resources for Indigenous students pursuing a career
- Testimonials connecting to full articles on our Power Up Blog
- Helpful questions and answers about preparing for a job
We highly encourage sharing this page with students and young adults who are exploring where they may fit into the workforce—whether you assign it as homework, give class time for them to explore on their own, or setup an exploration station to take turns scrolling the site.
We're so excited to share this new hub with you. We welcome your feedback and encourage you to check back as we refresh content on this page. Check it out!
New activities exploring sustainable careers
Our latest unit Careers for a Sustainable Future explores the many ways that youth can connect their future careers with a passion for sustainability. The best way to manage anxieties about climate and conservation are to turn them into action, and this unit shows just how sustainability connects to the economy and a marketplace full of exciting jobs.
This unit features three activities for Grades 8–12:
Through these activities, you'll pursue the following learning objectives:
- Understand how diverse careers contribute to sustainability and the green economy through innovation, conservation, and responsible resource use.
- Investigate the range of skills, education paths, and industries shaping environmentally focused careers and the future workforce.
- Highlight real-world examples of professionals making an impact through energy conservation, technology, and sustainable practices.
The new Career Connections page complements this unit well. Incorporate these activities into your lesson plan to start inspiring the generation who'll drive our sustainable future.
An inspiring interview on a career in conservation
Our Power Up Blog features insights into BC Hydro careers, and we plan to continue publishing articles and interviews to bring you inside the company and the employees that make it special.
We've just published an interview with Joyce Ip, a Natural Resource Specialist who shares what led her to a career at Hydro and why she enjoys her job. On top of the practical advice she shares, we think Joyce is a great example of someone who turned a passion for nature and environmentalism into a career focused on just those things.
The future of our environment is on students' minds more than ever, so we're excited to share an example of that passion in action. Read the article for more insight on Joyce's career path into BC Hydro.
